COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Over the next few weeks, USA Field Hockey will be celebrating and honoring the 2026 Hall of Fame inductees prior to the Gala, hosted by the USA Field Hockey Foundation.

Atlanta 1996 Olympian Benjamin John Maruquin was a solid defender for the U.S. Men’s National Team. He was a two-time USA Field Hockey Male Athlete of the Year and competed in 213 international matches from 1989 to 1997.

From Ventura, Calif., Maruquin was taught the sport from his father, Marvin, and his uncle, Bo Stockdill, both of whom competed at the Pan American Games in the 1970s. His international playing career started in 1985 at just 15 years old when he joined the U.S. U-21 Men’s National Team. His first event came in 1989 when he participated in the Junior World Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia. That same year, he went on to play on the senior squad at the Intercontinental Cup in Madison, N.J., which served as the World Cup Qualifier at the time.

In 1991, Maruquin was selected to represent USA at the Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba, where he helped the red, white and blue secure bronze. Later that year in Auckland, New Zealand, he competed in the International Cup, which was an Olympic Qualifying event. For his performances throughout the year, he was named USA Field Hockey Male Athlete of the Year.

Maruquin was a resident athlete at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. from 1989 to 1991 and played for Old Hale Hockey Club in Perth, Australia during the 1991-92 season. In 1994, he played in a 4-Nations in Toronto, Canada and a 5-Nations in Madison, N.J.

In 1995, Maruquin was once again named USA Field Hockey Male Athlete of the Year after helping USA to another bronze medal finish at the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina. In the lead up to the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games, he was a resident athlete at the Olympic Training Center in San Diego, Calif. as the squad prepared to host on home soil.

Upon retiring from the USMNT in 1997, Maruquin joined the Australian Hockey League for three seasons and played for both North Queensland Barras in 1997 and 1999 and the Brisbane Blades in 1998, where helped the team win bronze at the Australian National Championship. Also from 1997 to 1999, he played for Wesley and South Perth (Wasps), where in 1998 he won the Fairest and Best Award for the Wasps Hockey Club.

In addition to his accomplished playing career, Maruquin made contributions to field hockey by actively promoting and growing the sport for boys and men for more than a decade. From 2005 to 2014, he was the head coach of the Ventura County High Performance Training Center and worked within the junior and senior U.S. Men’s National Team program as either an assistant coach, manager, or video assistant. Those notable events include the 2007 Pan American Games, 2008 Junior Pan American Championship (bronze), 2008 Olympic Qualifier, 2009 Pan American Cup (silver), 2009 FIH Hockey Junior World Cup, 2009 World Cup Qualifier, 2011 Pan American Games, 2012 Junior Pan American Championship (4th), and 2014 Hockey5s Pan American Cup (4th).
