2026 Hall of Fame Inductee: Renee Chatas
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Over the next few weeks, USA Field Hockey will be celebrating and honoring the 2026 Hall of Fame inductees prior to the Gala, hosted by the USA Field Hockey Foundation.
One of the most decorated officials in USA Field Hockey history, Renee Chatas represented the USA at three Olympic Games and two World Cups during her career from the 1988 to 2000. Not only did her career reflect a pioneering era for women in officiating, but her presence on the global stage helped set the standard for those who followed.
Chatas’ career as an international umpire is a story of precision, resilience, and quiet authority on the world’s biggest stages. Over more than a decade at the highest levels of the sport, she built a résumé that placed her at the center of some of the game’s most prestigious events.
Her international journey began in the late 1980s, quickly gaining momentum as she earned appointments to major global tournaments. By 1991, Chatas was already officiating across continents at events like the Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba, European Championship in Brussels, Belgium, and Summer Universiade World Student Games in Sheffield, England. Just a year later, she reached one of sport’s ultimate stages: the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games.
From there, Chatas became a mainstay at the pinnacle of international hockey. She officiated at two more Olympic Games - including Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 - an achievement that places her among an elite group of officials trusted at the sport’s highest level. Her World Cup appointments in Dublin (1994) and Utrecht (1998), along with Champions Trophy selections in Berlin (1997) and Brisbane (1999), further underscore her standing within the global hockey community.
Beyond these marquee events, Chatas’ career was marked by its breadth. She contributed to the development of the game across regions, officiating two Olympic Qualifiers, and other international tournaments spanning Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas. Domestically, she also played a key role in the game taking the field at multiple NCAA Division I Championships.
Through decades of service, Chatas didn’t just officiate the game, she helped shape it, leaving a legacy defined by excellence, consistency, and an unwavering commitment to the sport.
Chatas played collegiately at the University of California Berkeley, where she was an All-American, ranks seventh on Cal’s all-time career goals list (34) and eighth on the career points list (79). She also played on the U.S. Women’s National Team for a period of time.
