  • How and when did field hockey first become your game?

Harry Marcoplos, an American field hockey player who competed in the 1948 and 1956 Summer Olympics, taught and helped coach with Blanche McCleary at my school, Calvert School in Baltimore, Md. I was introduced in lower school. I fell in love with the game at an early age.

  • What does it mean to you to still be lacing up — and to wear the USA jersey — at the Masters level?

It is surreal, an ENORMOUS honor. I am still in awe of my teammates and grateful beyond words to represent our country.

  • What would you tell someone who's on the fence about giving Masters a try?

Don’t think twice about it! Try out and don’t give up! I tried out in my early 50’s thanks to the encouragement of a BFHA player, Janet Powers. I did not have a good tryout and knew others were better than me. Later I made the team. FUN!

  • What's the field hockey moment you'll never forget?

I’m sure I could come up with many but honestly the feeling of being at home and so content while playing on the field. It was an  honor to play as a freshman in high school.

  • If you had a moment to thank the people and places that keep you on the field, who would you name?

Butch Darrell, a coach at Garrison Forest School, he never coached me but he would watch our games and for years he would tell me how beautiful it was to watch me play center forward and have the ball come across the goal area and watch me put up my stick and score. Definitely a HUGE shout out to BFHA and all the players I have played with and against for over four decades I believe. They are outstanding individuals, have continued to put up with me and always cheering me on. My family, husband, 3 sons and daughter-in-laws, and best friends all who have offered deeply meaningful unending support in too many ways to name.

  • About Pam Sherry (Brillo)

    Hometown: Collegeville, Pa.

    Lives in: Collegeville, Pa.

    Age Division: Women's O-65

    Position: Goalkeeper

    Club: Red Rose Masters

    College: Lock Haven

    Occupation: Coach. Retired teacher

  • How and when did field hockey first become your game?

I actually didn’t start playing until my junior year in high school (1972). Our school didn’t have girls sports in junior high. I had played a year of lacrosse goalkeeper and when the hockey team needed a goalkeeper I said “sure “. Best decision ever.

  • What's the field hockey moment you'll never forget?

June of 2019.was the first time I played internationally and the first time the US fielded an O60 team. It was the European Cup tournament at KHC Dragons and we took gold in the Trophy Tournament. It was a great introduction to international hockey. Many of my teammates from that team are with me on the O-65 team now and we are on the verge of being able to field an O-70 women's team.

  • What would you tell someone who's on the fence about giving Masters a try?

When Linda Kreiser first approached me about playing Masters I was not sure at all.  I had not played for fifteen years, but Kreis was so encouraging and positive, I took the leap and I am so happy I did.

  • If you had a moment to thank the people and places that keep you on the field, who would you name?

The first big shout out for this has to go to Ashley Moss and her whole team of medical people.  They go above and beyond at the tournaments, but are also available to answer questions and concerns during the “off season.”  The other thing that keeps me on track is my teammates and knowing that they are training and working hard so it keeps me going especially when I don't necessarily feel like it.

  • How has your game changed over the years — what do you rely on now versus in your 20s?

Well starting with the equipment as a goalkeeper it isn’t even the same game.  In high school and even college I wore canvas legguards and kickers.  I had a stick and a small padded right hand glove. The amount of equipment I wear now was probably the biggest adjustment. I am thankful for the padding of course, considering the speed of the turf and the power that the sticks can generate.  The other thing, of course is the equipment might be new, but my body isn’t, so I have to really concentrate on the mental part of the game because I'm not as able to react and adjust to being out of position or off balance as I could when i was 20.

  • What does the Masters field hockey community mean to you?

I really cherish the connections and friendships I have through Masters.  My O65 team does a lot of training with my O60 team so I feel very connected with that whole group, but it’s great when we go to tournaments and can spend time with the men and other age groups.Being a Masters player makes you part of a large diverse community with one thing in common - a love of field hockey.  It really is great.
