Schoenbeck's dad came home one day when she was around 5 years old and told her that se was going to start playing field hockey. Given that she didn't know what the sport was, she immediately thought ice hockey and started crying and hiding from him. Turns out it wasn't ice hockey, but much better. She started at the YMCA and played all day whenever there were games, on any team that would let her play. The rest is history.
