USWNT Finish with Silver at Pan American Cup
MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay – It was a close 2025 Pan American Cup final between the No. 12 U.S. Women’s National Team and highly ranked No. 3 Argentina. Despite their best defensive efforts, the United Eagles could not withstand the Argentina attack, falling 3-0 and heading home with a silver finish. Both Argentina and USA have already secured their spots at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup.
After static play to start the contest, Argentina earned back-to-back penalty corners in the 5th minute. On the second attempt, Agustina Gorzelany put Las Leonas ahead by dragging it into the corner.
For a majority of the second quarter it was a midfield battle, but Argentina were the ones producing more offensive opportunities. Jenny Rizzo made six saves, even fending off a penalty corner in the final minute.
In the 27th minute Argentina’s circle entry resulted in Jenny Rizzo getting a touch and Josie Hollamon making a defensive save.
In the final minute before the half, Jenny Rizzo made a save that resulted in an offensive burst for USA. Sanne Caarls had the initial clear out of the circle, and it was Phia Gladieux who drove it up the left baseline. Unfortunately, Gladieux did not have enough time before the halftime whistle sounded to make the run impactful.
A minute inside the third quarter, Argentina extended their lead to 2-0 when Eugenia Trinchinetti had a textbook deflection off the post. USA went on to produce a few good looks, but were still unable to find outcomes. Ones of these chances came in the 35th minute when Maddie Zimmer received an overhead in the circle sent up by Mia Schoenbeck, and fired a shot wide. With 2 minutes to go Reese D’Ariano ripped a shot that also earned USA a set piece. On the chance, the pass went back to inserter Ryleigh Heck, but it was well defended by Argentina's goalkeeper.
With 29 seconds to go, Argentina sealed the win when a through ball got to Julieta Jankunas, who sent a backhand into the corner. USA fell to Las Leonas, 3-0, to finish with a silver medal.
