2025 Hall of Fame Inductee: Beverly Johnson
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Over the next few weeks, USA Field Hockey will be celebrating and honoring the 2025 Hall of Fame inductees. This class honors five individuals who have played a significant role in the development and support of the sport in the United States during their long careers and are all being inducted as Contributors.
Beverly Johnson #
Beverly Johnson, a California native who served as the president of the United States Field Hockey Association (USFHA) from 1980 to 1984, is being inducted as a Contributor. As head of the USFHA organization during the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games, Johnson had the opportunity to see the USA women win their first Olympic medal in a thrilling stroke-off that catapulted the team to glory. It was even more special to have it happen in Los Angeles, where Johnson had devoted her life to the sport.
Johnson started playing the sport in junior high school, which was very uncommon in California. She graduated from South Pasadena High School before attending and graduating from University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, during which time she joined the LA Field Hockey Association, starting a lifelong association with the sport.
After earning a Master of Science from Smith College, Johnson returned to the Los Angeles area where she taught at Claremont High School and Pasadena City College (PCC). At PCC, she taught physical education and coached field hockey before it no longer existed in the SoCal community colleges. After that she switched and coached women’s soccer as well as men’s and women’s swimming and basketball. During her 30-year tenure as a professor there, Johnson also served two terms as the president of the Los Angeles Field Hockey Association—one term as president of the Pacific Southwest Section, and a term as vice president of Communications for the USFHA—before assuming the mantle of the presidency of the association.
Johnson achieved great acclaim in 1986 as she became the first United States based woman to serve as tournament director at a major international field hockey tournament. She sat on the PAHF's Board of Directors and served as the Chair of the Coaching and Development committee for seven years. Always active in youth development, she also supported the FIH as a member of the Coaching and Youth Development committee for the international association.
A member of USA Field Hockey’s Golden Girls, Johnson traveled the world supporting the U.S. Women's National Team after retiring from working at many of the FIH and PAHF tournaments as a technical officer or director.
USA Field Hockey will formally honor these legends of the game on Sunday, December 7, 2025 at Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pa. More information will be shared soon.
