Palo Alto, California – In a milestone moment for adult field hockey on the West Coast, six teams gathered at Stanford University on May 3 and 4 for the inaugural West Region United States Field Hockey League (USFHL) Adult Regional Club Championship (RCC). Representing a wide swath of states—California, Washington, Utah, Arizona and Colorado—the tournament showcased the growing depth and passion for the game in the West.
The reigning 2024 women’s National Club Champions, Olympic Club (Calif.), earned an automatic berth to this summer’s USFHL Adult National Club Championship (NCC), set to take place at the University of Delaware in Newark, Del. from July 18 to 20. The remaining teams competed fiercely for coveted spots alongside them on the national stage.
Representing the West on the women’s side were Olympic Club (Calif.), Rocky Mountain (Utah, Colo., & Ariz.), Bay Gulls (Calif.), and NCFHA (Calif.). The two teams competing on the men’s side were Seattle (Wash.) and Hayward Hawks (Calif.).
The event featured a round-robin format with the four women’s teams playing four games each, and two men’s teams battling in a two-game series.
After two days of exciting and highly competitive play, three teams punched their tickets to the Adult NCC:
Women’s Division
🥇 Olympic Club
🥈 Rocky Mountain
Men’s Division
🥇 Seattle
The winning goals for the Olympic Club in their final match against Rocky Mountain were scored by Sav Devarney and Marissa Baker. Capitalizing on a penalty corner, Devarney executed a new set piece strategy flawlessly. As the ball soared high, she timed her shot perfectly, striking it from above head height and sending it straight into the back of the net—a spectacular finish that sealed Olympic Club’s path to victory.
Ilam Subbiah powered Seattle to victory in the men’s first game, netting two key goals against the Hayward Hawks. His pivotal scoring performance set the tone for Seattle’s success in the tournament, helping secure a crucial win in their push for the men’s West Adult RCC title.
This successful inaugural event not only crowned champions, but also marked a significant step forward for adult hockey in the West. By creating high-level competitive opportunities closer to home, USA Field Hockey and regional organizers are focusing on reducing travel burdens and fueling the continued growth of the adult game.
“It was really special to be able to partake in and watch so much high-level hockey this weekend!” commented Genny Jawor, West Adult RCC Tournament Director. “We had so many talented athletes representing the west, and it was an honor to be able to host and see them in action. I feel very lucky that field hockey can still be a big part of my life as an adult, as it continues to be a big source of joy for me. I am already looking forward to next year, with hopes of even more teams participating!”
Jawor also expressed gratitude to Megan Frazer for her coordination efforts, and to Stanford University for graciously hosting the West Adult RCC on their beautiful pitch.
A special thank you to all the organizers, teams, umpires, and supporters who made this weekend possible — we look forward to many more opportunities to showcase adult hockey talent in the West!
