Weekend College Games: Division II & III Season Opener Edition

USA Field Hockey's weekly feature of highlighting some of the top college games in Division I, II and III is back for the 2021 season. This week marks the season opener edition of Division II and III games.

DIII: No. 18 Vassar vs. Smith | 3:00 p.m. ET | Boxcast
Ranking No. 18 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division III National Coaches Preseason Poll, Vassar will welcome Smith to Weinberg Field for their season opener.
The Brewers have reached three consecutive Liberty League Championship games while earning its first league title in 2018. They field a young team with eight upperclassmen, 11 sophomores, and five first-years. In 2019, they featured the Liberty League's top defense, allowing just 16 goals in 19 games.
The Pioneers went 4-12 overall and 2-6 in the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) in 2019. They will look to repeat in their season opener as they did in the previous season (2019) when they came out victorious.
When these teams met in 2019, Vassar won the game, 2-0.
DIII: Marywood vs. Elmira | 4:00 p.m. ET | Atlantic East Network
In Scranton, Pa., Marywood will host Elmira for both team's season openers.
The Pacers claimed the top spot in the Atlantic East Preseason Coaches' Poll. Prior to not having a season last year, Marywood captured the 2019 Atlantic East Championships after defeating Wesley, 2-1, in double overtime. They went 16-4 overall in 2019.
The Soaring Eagles are eager to get back to a full season, having playing in a modified one that featured four games in the spring. In 2019, they went 6-10 over all and were winless in the Empire 8.
The last time these teams met was in 2016, where Marywood won, 4-0.
DIII: Wilson vs. Sweet Briar | 5:00 p.m. ET |
Wilson and Sweet Briar open up the season in a Colonial State Athletic Conference (CSAC) match-up in Chambersburg, Pa., and a repeat of their 2019 season opener.
The Phoenix went 10-9 overall and 4-2 in CSAC play. As defending 2019 CSAC Champions
In the Vixens' first season as a member of the CSAC, they will look to make an impression early. In the shortened spring season, they went 2-6, and in 2019 they were 6-7 overall. Sweet Briar also just announced that they are investing in a synthetic, water-based turf field, which will be home to field hockey, soccer and lacrosse.
When they met in the 2019 season opener, Wilson won, 3-0.
DIII: Houghton vs. Oswego | 7:00 p.m. ET | Highlanders All-Access
In a non-conference game, Houghton will host Oswego in X.
The Lions are ready to have a full season, after only competing in six games in the spring, which ended in an Empire 8 Tournament loss. In 2019, they went 6-11 and 3-4 in the Empire 8.
The Lakers have not competed since the fall of 2019 when they went 4-12 overall and 1-5 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).
When these teams met in August 2019, it was a tight contest, where Oswego pulled out the 2-1 win.

DII: No. 9 Southern New Hampshire vs. American International | 6:00 p.m. ET | NE10 Now
A Northeast-10 (NE10) match-up that doesn't could toward the conference standings, Southern New Hampshire will welcome American International to Manchester, N.H.
The Penmen were posted its highest finish ever in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll, tied for fourth. Head coach Julie Munson enters her eighth season at the helm and has her squad in action for the time since 2019, when Southern New Hampshire recorded their best season in program history, going 17-5, including 12-2 in the league, while earning a spot in the NE10 Final for the first time and also receiving the program's first NCAA Division II Championship at-large bid. SNHU set school records in wins (17), conference wins (12), postseason wins (2), consecutive wins (11) and highest national ranking (5).
Coming in on the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll at No. 12,Yellow Jackets are looking to continue from their 2019 campaign where they went 10-8 overall and 6-8 in the NE10.
These teams last played on October 29, 2019, where an overtime match saw Southern New Hampshire prevail, 2-1.
DIII: Anna Maria vs. Worcester State | 4:00 p.m. ET | Boxcast
Anna Maria and Worcester State will open the season in Paxton, Mass., a repeat game of the start of the 2019.
The Amcats are looking to build off the 2019 season, where they were the fourth seed going into the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament. Head Coach Brooke Brigham is excited to be back on the field as she enters her sixth season at the helm. In 2019, they went 8-9 overall and were even at 4-4 in the GNAC.
The Lancers have been selected to the top spot in the Little East Conference (LEC) Preseason Coaches' Poll. Worcester State won their first LEC Championship in 2019 and enter the 2021 season as reigning champions after their 2020 season was canceled. They went 18-5 overall and 11-1 in the LEC in 2019, and fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Messiah, 9-0.
In the 2019 edition, Worcester State won, 4-0.

DI: Rider vs. Bellarmine | 11:00 a.m. ET
In Oxford, Ohio, Rider (2-0, 0-0 NEC) and Bellarmine (1-0, 0-0 MAC) are set for a neutral-site game this Friday.
The Broncs are coming off a two win weekend over La Salle, 3-2 OT, and Colgate, 2-1. Friday's match against the Explorers needed overtime to find the winner, and that gol came just over six minutes into the extra period to give Rider a season opening win. They took that momentum and upended Colgate with a goal coming with 1:24 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Knights didn't have to wait long for their first Division I victory of the season when they pulled off the 2-1 upset over Ball State on Sunday. The Cardinals, who were picked to finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference this season, notched their long goal late in the third quarter. The victory was particularly sweet for the Knights, who return all but one player from last year's squad that went 0-13 as Bellarmine made the transition to Division I.
Being that this is only Bellarmine's second season in Division I, counting the spring 2021, they have not played Rider yet.
DI: Hofstra vs. Temple | 3:00 p.m. ET | FloSport
Hofstra (1-1, 0-0 CAA) and Temple (2-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) will battle it out in Hempstead, N.Y. this Friday afternoon.
The Pride split results last weekend, falling to Lafayette 2-0 on Friday but responding on Sunday with a 5-1 win over Wagner. Their victory was powered behind a strong third quarter, where three goals were scored within a seven minute span.
The Owls are coming off a two win weekend, beating Merrimack, 2-0, and Drexel, 3-2. For the third-straight season, Temple shutout their opponents in the season opener with their victory over Merrimack. Two days later, they added another to the win column in a strong performance against Drexel to close out the weekend. The Dragons scored in the opening quarter but the Owls responded with two in the second and another in the third to put the game out of reach.
These teams last played on February 12, where Temple came out victorious winning 1-0.
DII: Bentley vs. Bloomsburg | 12:00 p.m. ET | Live Stats
Bentley and Bloomsburg kick off the 2021 season in with a match-up in Waltham, Mass.
The Falcons will open the season with the first of three non-conference home games in a six day span. They are coming off a 9-10 overall and 7-7 record in the Northeast-10 (NE10). Their season ended with a heartbreaking double overtime loss in the NE10 Quarterfinals to Southern New Hampshire.
The Huskies were selected to finish sixth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Preseason Coaches' Poll. They are returning their lead goal-scorer from 2019 in Foto Tsioles, who finished the year with eight goals and one assist for 17 points. In 2019, they went 7-11 overall and 4-6 in PSAC play.
These teams haven't played since 2006, where Bloomsburg topped Bentley, 1-0.
DIII: Morrisville State vs. Castleton | 4:00 p.m. ET | LEC Network
After both teams missed the 2020 season entirely, Morrisville State will host Castleton in New York on Friday.
The Mustangs return six to the roster that gained experience two seasons ago. In 2019, they went 2-16 and 0-6 in the SUNYAC.
The Spartans have a lone returner from the 2019 season in junior Kaitlin Bardellini, who is also serving as captain of this year's team. Joining Bardellini on the Spartan's roster is one junior, eight sophomores and four freshmen, and while none of them have played a field hockey game for Castleton yet, some were able to compete in sports that took place in the spring that should have them ready for this season. Despite being an almost completely new team, this 2021 group will look to carry some momentum left behind by the 2019 squad and earn a spot in the Little East Conference playoffs for the third time in as many seasons.
These teams last played September 1, 2019, where Castleton won, 9-0.

DI: Ohio vs. Northeastern | 1:00 p.m. ET
Ohio (0-2, 0-0 MAC) will welcome Northeastern (0-2, 0-0 CAA) to Athens for a Saturday afternoon match-up. Both teams will be searching for their first season win.
The Bobcats opened the season with two losses. Both taking place in Kentucky, they fell to No. 5 Louisville, 6-0, on Friday and lost to New Hampshire, 1-0, on Saturday.
The Huskies fell in both their contest last weekend. They opened the season Friday with a 3-0 loss to Massachusetts, before narrowly losing to Monmouth 6-5 on Sunday.
These teams last played in 2005, where Northeastern won, 7-2.
DII: No. 10 Stonehill vs. No. 2 East Stroudsburg | 11:00 a.m. ET | Skyhawks Vision
A top-10 season opening match-up will take place between No. 10 Stonehill and No. 2 East Stroudsburg in North Easton, Mass.
The Skyhawks went 11-6 overall and 11-3 in the Northeast-10 (NE10) Conference in 2019. Their great run ended in the NE10 Quarterfinals when they fell closely to Assumption, 1-0.
The Warriors has made five straight NCAA Tournament appearances and posted a 86-21 since its 2015 national championship season, has it's best preseason ranking since 2018. ESU welcomes 22 new student-athletes to this year's roster which includes three transfers and six international student-athletes from both the Netherlands and Sweden. In 2019, they went 19-3 overall and 9-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), with their season ending in the NCAA Division II Semifinals.
When these teams met in 2019, East Stroudsburg won the close battle, 1-0.
DIII: Susquehanna vs. No. 14 Christopher Newport | 11:00 a.m. ET | Landmark Digital Network
In the opening game of the Conne Harnum Classic, Susquehanna will host No. 14 Christopher Newport in Selinsgrove, Pa.
The Riverhawks were just below .500 in 2019 with a 10-11 overall and 5-2 Landmark Conference performance. They fell in the Landmark Final, to No. 1 seeded Scranton, 4-1.
The Captains, who were slotted No. 14 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division II Preseason Coaches Poll, welcomes back three All-Conference performers from 2019. IN their previous season, they went 14-5 overall and 4-1 in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC), falling in the the CAC Title game.
DIII: Drew vs. Cabrini | 12:00 p.m. ET | Landmark Digital Network
The first game of the Drew Fall Festival will host Drew and Cabrini in Madison, N.J.
The Rangers will be led by interim head coach Sally Dreyer and will feature a blend of experienced players and underclassmen as the squad competes in its first official season since the fall of 2019. Drew will be paced by a veteran senior class of five, all of whom have significant playing time under their belts. Drew played a modified spring season of just three games, and recorded a 3-16 overall and 0-7 Landmark record in 2019.
The Cavaliers went 3-16 overall and 1-4 in the Atlantic East (AE) Conference in 2019. Their season ended when they fell to Immaculata in overtime int he AE Semifinals. A the helm of Cabrini is Jackie Neary who has been the coach for 25 years and led the program to four conference championships and four NCAA Tournament appearances.
Their last match-up was in 2018, where Cabrini won, 1-0.
DIII: York vs. Wilkes | 1:00 p.m. ET | York All-Access
Following their opening match being postponed, York will host Wilkes at Kinsley Field in Pennsylvania.
The Spartans enter the 2021 season a young and hungry team. York returns to the field for the first time since November 6, 2019 when they lost to #3 Salisbury in the Capital Athletic Conference Semifinals. Much has changed since that night in Salisbury, Md. For one, the Spartans are now in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth, a league that gives York a number of natural rivalries. The other change is the roster for the Spartans as York returns just five starters from that 2019 team.
The Colonels were picked to finish sixth in the MAC Freedom Coaches' Preseason Poll after finishing the 2019 season 10-9 overall and 3-4 in conference play. Under new leadership of Charlotte MacDonald, she will look to return the program to MAC Freedom contention.
DIII: Regis vs. Eastern Connecticut State | 4:00 p.m. ET | Video
At Regis Stadium, the home team of Regis will welcome Easter Connecticut State to Weston, Mass.
The Pride is eager to underway following the no-season in 2020 and having their first game postponed. In 2019, they went 8-11 overall and 4-4 in the Greater Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), having their season end in the semifinal round of the tournament.
The Warriors went 6-12 overall and 5-7 in the Little East in 2019. Under the reigns of Christine Hutchinson in her 16th year, they are returning four top athletes with a handful of newcomers who will make an immediate impact.
In their 2019 meeting, Easter Connecticut State won the close game, 2-1.

DI: No. 13 Princeton vs. No. 5 Louisville | 1:30 p.m. ET | EPSN+
No. 13 Princeton will host No. 5 Louisville for their season game of the season, after hosting No. 1 North Carolina on Friday.
The Tigers were selected No. 1 in the Ivy League Preseason Poll, after the conference decided not to have a season this past spring. In 2019, Princeton went 16-5 overall and 7-0 in the Ivy League. Their season ended in the NCAA Division I Final, falling to North Carolina 6-1.
The Cardinals are coming off a two-win season opening weekend against Ohio, 6-0, and New Hampshire, 3-0. Not conceding a goal across the 120 minutes, Louisville senior Alli Bitting was name ACC Defensive Player of the Week aiding in the shutouts.
These teams haven't met since 2010, where Princeton won, 3-0.
DII: No. 4 Shippensburg vs. Coker | 1:00 p.m. ET | PSAC Digital Network
No. 4 Shippensburg and Coker will open the season t the Robb Sports Complex in Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon.
The Raiders have been a fixture in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament, having qualified for the conference playoffs in 19 consecutive seasons dating back to 2001. They're familiar with the high level of play in the league and are eager to get back to that level of competition. In addition to conference success, Shippensburg has four NCAA Division II National Championships to its credit. The current seniors were around to experience SU's most recent title in 2018.
The Cobras are ready to defend the program's first South Atlantic Conference Carolinas championship entering the 2021 season. Coker returns 16 players from last year's conference championship team, including Preseason All-Conference selections Britt Kabo and Rylie Cordrey. Coker also adds five new faces to the mix this season, who have meshed well with the large group of returners.
DII: Newberry vs. Seton Hill | 2:00 p.m. ET
Newberry will welcome Seton Hill toGeorge P. Miller Stadium in Indiana, Pa. for a Sunday afternoon match-up.
After a 5-3 shortened 2021 spring season, the Wolves are picked to finish fourth in the preseason South Atlantic Conference Carolinas (SAC) Preseason Poll. In 2019, they had a historic run for the program finishing 13-5 overall and 9-3 in the SAC Carolinas, falling in the final.
The Griffins will look to build on their one-win season in 2019, where they went 1-15 overall and 0-10 in the PSAC.
In their meeting in 2017, Newberry won, 2-1.
DIII: No. 17 Centre vs. Wittenberg | 1:30 p.m. ET | Centre All-Access
No. 17 Centre will round out their opening home weekend when they host Wittenburg on Sunday.
The Colonels gathered all five available first-place votes to secure the top sport in the inaugural Southern Athletic Association (SAA) field hockey preseason poll. The defending-champions had a shortened spring season, only playing in three match-ups, but went 18-1 overall and 4-0 in the SAA in 2019. There season ended with a run in the NCAA Division III Tournament, where they fell to Lynchburg in the opening round.
With 10 new recruits, the Tigers are looking forward to the 2021 season under head coach Bronwen Gainsford, her first full season. They were 7-9 overall and 4-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC)

DI: Ball State vs. Saint Louis | 4:00 p.m. ET | ESPN+
Ball State (0-2, 0-0 MAC) will host Saint Louis (0-2, 0-0 A-10) at Briner Sports Complex in Muncie, Ind. on Monday afternoon for their first home game.
The Cardinals will be searching for a tally in the win column after falling to No. 22 Ohio State, 1-0, and Bellarmine, 2-1, on opening weekend.
The Billikens will also be searching for a win, after dropping both games last weekend. Having yet to score a goal, a hungry Saint Louis team faced strong opponents in Michigan State (4-0) and Kent State (3-0).
DII: Mercyhurst vs. Queens | 1:00 p.m. ET | PSAC Digital Network
Queens will travel to Erie, Pa. to take on Mercyhurst at Saxon Stadium.
This is the Lakers season opener after having an abbreviated six game season in the spring. In 2019, Mercyhurst went 3-15 overall and 1-9 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
The Royals were selected to finish top of the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas (SAC) Preseason Poll. This is the second straight season that the Royals have landed first in the preseason poll after they entered the shortened 2020 season played in the spring favored to finish first. Queens posted a 4-2 league record and a 6-3 overall record in the spring. In 2019, the Royals won their first-ever regular season conference championship after posting a 10-2 league record. They finished the season at 13-7.
In their 2019 meeting, Queens won the match-up, 5-0.
DIII: Haverford vs. Immaculata | 4:30 p.m. ET
Haverford will host Immaculata in Pennsyvlania on Monday afternoon.
The Fords was picked ninth in the Centennial Conference Field Hockey Preseason Poll. In 2019, Haverford went 9-8 after sprinting out to a strong start to the season, capturing votes in the NFHCA National Coaches Poll in September heading into a showdown with No. 2 Rowan in which the Fords took the Profs to the limit in a 1-0 loss. The Fords will be looking to return to the postseason for the first time since a 2017 Centennial Conference semifinal berth at Johns Hopkins.
The Mighty Macs were picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic East Conference. A season ago, Immaculata played an abbreviated schedule as a result of the pandemic, finishing the year with a record of 1-3. In fall 2019, Immaculata played to a record of 6-15 overall and 1-4 in league play with its Atlantic East victory coming over Neumann.
In their 2019 meeting, Haverford won, 9-0.

DI: No. 10 Liberty vs. No. 4 Northwestern | 12:00 p.m. ET | ESPN+
At top-10 meeting, will take place in Lynchburg, Va. when No. 10 Liberty (3-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) will host No. 4 Northwestern (2-0, 0-0 Big Ten) on Tuesday.
The Flames are coming off a three win opening weekend over UC Davis (7-1), California (3-0) and Stanford (5-1). Liberty has now started 3-0 in the three straight seasons.
The Wildcats completed a weekend sweep over ranked opponents, beating No. 6 Connecticut (4-0) and #21 Miami (6-2) last weekend. They will travel south to take on No. 12 Duke and No. 7 Boston College in the B1G/ACC Challenge in Raleigh, N.C. on Friday and Sunday.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Liberty Head Coach Nikki Parsley-Blocker attended Northwestern and competed for the Wildcats from 2020-13.DII: Belmont Abbey vs. Converse | 7:00 p.m. ET
In an early season South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Carolinas meeting, Belmont Abbey will welcome Converse in North Carolina.
This is the Knights' season opener but will look to improve on their 7-12 overall and 6-6 SAC Carolinas record from 2019. Belmont Abbey has been picked sixth in the 2021 SAC Carolinas Preseason Poll.
The Valkyries were selected to finish fifth in the 2021 SAC Carolinas Preseason Poll. This is the fifth season that Converse has offered field hockey as a collegiate sport and it is also the fourth season in which the Valkyries will participate in the SAC Conference. Last spring, the Valkyries reached the playoffs for the first time in program history as the sixth seed. The Valkyries will look to build off that success as they return almost every player from last season, including all three captains.
These teams last played in the spring, where Converse won 1-0.
DIII: No. 1 Middlebury vs. Castleton | 6:00 p.m. ET | LEC Network
The top-ranked No. 1 Middlebury will open their season when they host Castleton at Kohn Field on Tuesday.
The three-time defending NCAA Division III National Champions, the Panthers are looking to resume where they left off in the 2019 season going 21-1 and 9-1 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).

DI: Ohio vs. UC Davis | 2:00 p.m. ET
A Wednesday afternoon meeting will take place between Ohio (0-2, 0-0 MAC) and UC Davis (0-1, 0-0 AE) in Athens, Ohio.
The Bobcats opened the season with two losses. Both taking place in Kentucky, they fell to No. 5 Louisville, 6-0, on Friday and lost to New Hampshire, 1-0, on Saturday.
The Aggies dropped their season opener against No. 10 Liberty, 7-1. UC Davis' lone goal came in the 48th minute.
These teams last met in 2019, UC Davis narrowly won, 2-1.
DII: Franklin Pierce vs. American International | 4:00 p.m. ET | Video
A Northeast-10 (NE-10) Conference game will feature Franklin Pierce and American International in Rindge, N.H.
The Ravens went 8-11 overall and 7-7 in the NE-10 in 2019. Franklin Pierce made their return to the conference tournament for the first time since 2011. This was their fifth all-time appearance in the league's postseason tournament and they still are looking for their first win (0-5).

DIII: No. 3 Johns Hopkins vs. No. 13 Lynchburg | 4:00 p.m. ET | Video
No. 3 Johns Hopkins will host No. 13 Lynchburg in a top-15 match-up in Baltimore, Md.
The Blue Jays open their season on Thursday against Shenandoah and will play on Saturday against Bridgewater. They will be looking to make it three straight trips to the final four and repeat as Centennial Champions after being ranked No. 3 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division III Preseason Poll.
The Hornets were picked first in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, being three-time defending champions. Lynchburg enters 2021 in search of the program's 22nd ODAC title, more than all other conference programs combined.
These teams last played in 2008 where Johns Hopkins won, 2-1.
DIII: Washington vs. No. 5 Salisbury | 7:00 p.m. ET
Washington will host No. 5 Salisbury in Chestertown, Md. for an early season game on Wednesday.
Washington went 4-12 overall and 2-8 in the Centennial Conference in 2019.
The Sea Gulls' last official season in 2019, where they finished with a 20-2 record. They won its 22nd conference championship during the 2019 slate and advanced to the NCAA Division III National Semifinals. They were announced as preseason favorites in the Coast-2-Coast Conference.
DIII: No. 2 Franklin & Marshall vs. No. 8 Messiah | 7:00 p.m. ET | CC Digital Network
A top-8 match-up between No. 2 Franklin and Marshall and No. 8 Messiah will take place on Wednesday.
It marks the highest that the Diplomats have reached in the polls since the 2013 season, when they briefly took over the No. 1 spot after spending a few weeks ranked No. 2. Franklin and Marshall went 20-4 overall and 9-1 in the Centennial Conference in 2019. They advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament but fell to Middlebury in the title match.
The Falcons look to capture their 14th-consecutive MAC Commonwealth Championship this season while making an NCAA Tournament appearance for their 20th-straight season. In 2019, they went 17-5 overall and 7-0 in the MAC Commonwealth.
In their 2019 meeting, Messiah won, 3-2.
