2021 USA Field Hockey National Umpire Award Winner: Mallory Federoff

by USA Field Hockey

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Following the announcement of all winners, USA Field Hockey is individually highlighting each recipient of USA Field Hockey's 2021 Annual Awards. This week, USA Field Hockey is honored to feature the 2021 National Umpire Award winner Mallory Federoff.

Federoff grew up in Middleburg, Pa., where she started playing field hockey in the fourth grade. She played throughout high school, even earning spot on the U.S. U-16 and U-19 Women’s National Teams during that time. She went on to play collegiately at Penn State University from 2004 to 2007, and in her final season helped lead the Nittany Lions to be NCAA Runner-Up while also earning All-America honors.

Two years after graduating, Federoff dove into the coaching world and became an assistant at Lock Haven University until 2016. Also, during that time, she had a 3-year stint on the U.S. Women’s National Indoor Team and she became an active Nexus, formerly Futures, coach.

Federoff began her umpiring journey in 2016, at first as a way to stay involved and current within the collegiate game. Since she developed a lengthy umpiring resume, that includes high school, college and international appointments. She is the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Rules Interpreter for the Pittsburgh High School Chapter and a certified USA Field Hockey Level 3 Umpire. She officiated at three NCAA Division II National Championship, including the final in 2019. In 2021 alone, she officiated four Division I Conference Tournaments with the BIG EAST and Big Ten in the spring and Atlantic 10 and Colonial Athletic Association the fall. She was also appointed to the 2020 and 2021 NCAA Division I National Championships.

Internationally she was on the sideline during the 2019 U.S. Women’s National Team series against Canada and U-22 USWNT versus Chile Series this past July.

When she isn’t on the field umpiring, she coaches field hockey camps and clinics through her own company, Upswing Clinics, and spends a lot of time golfing with her husband, Larry, and friends

“I’m very honored to receive this award after such an exciting year of field hockey,” commented Federoff.  “I can’t thank my family, friends and colleagues enough for their support and encouragement throughout my umpiring career so far. I’d also like to encourage any current and former players to give umpiring a try. It’s a great way to give back and grow the game that has given us so many opportunities!”

Congratulations once again to Mallory Federoff for winning the 2021 USA Field Hockey National Umpire Award. Join USA Field Hockey to celebrate and honor all of the 2021 Annual Awards on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at the 100th Anniversary and Hall of Fame Celebration, hosted by the U.S. Field Hockey Foundation, at The Union League of Philadelphia.
