by USA Field Hockey

MALDEN, Mass. - Join USA Field Hockey and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) for FREE Field Hockey Clinics as part of a celebration on Saturday, October 29, at Malden High School’s MacDonald Stadium in Malden, Mass.

The day will include clinics for boys and girls, coaches and umpires, and will feature special guests from USA Field Hockey including Harry Singh, U.S. Men’s National Team Head Coach; Marc Bakerman, Boys Development Manager; Jill Reeves, Atlanta 1996 Olympian and former Brown University Head Coach; Sean Rapaport, Head of Umpiring; Sally Goggin, National Development Director; and Jeanne O'Brien, USA Field Hockey's Board of Directors and Umpire Representative. MIAA leaders will include Associate Director Sherry Bryant and Malden High School Athletic Director Charlie Conefrey. Those new to field hockey are welcome and equipment will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to bring shin guards and a mouthguard.

USA Field Hockey is here to celebrate an epic milestone in field hockey. Malden High School is the first all-boy’s high school field hockey team sanctioned by the state athletic association. Congratulations and thank you to Malden High School and the MIAA!

Many in the United States don’t realize that field hockey is the third most popular and widely played sport in the world, and one of the most gender equal. It’s an Olympic Sport for men and women and the Junior and Senior USMNT squads have been steadily moving up in the rankings as they prepare to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The MIAA is a leader in supporting student-engagement in field hockey. With more than 200 high school field hockey programs in the state, the MIAA provides field hockey opportunity to thousands of high school students. Massachusetts is unique in that state law permits co-ed play. Seeing an increase in interest among boys, the MIAA decided to offer Boy’s Field Hockey by sanctioning the sport. In 2022, Malden High School became the first boy’s high school program in the country. USA Field Hockey applauds the MIAA’s initiative to create and sanction a boy’s field hockey league and hopes this October 29 event will raise awareness of boys’ and men’s field hockey.

“A huge thanks to the MIAA for their partnership,” stated Sally Goggin, USA Field Hockey’s National Development Director. “The MIAA, and specifically Associate Director Sherry Bryant, is at the forefront of increasing student engagement in field hockey by offering 200+ high school teams and by sanctioning field hockey as a new sport for boys. We hope boys high school field hockey will take off in Massachusetts and that soon, many boys teams will be competing and representing their schools in interscholastic competitions.”

“The opportunity for boys in field hockey is tremendous,” stated Marc Bakerman, USA Field Hockey’s Boy’s Development Manager. “Field hockey is loved by men across the globe for its athleticism, skill and fast-pace. We welcome boys to come give it a try and are confident boys of all ages will fall in love with the game.”
