2021 YMNC & YWNC: Day 1 Review

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Great competition was played at the first day of the 2021 Young Men’s and Women’s National Championship taking place at the Virginia Beach Regional Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va.
On the Young Women’s National Championship (YWNC) side, Freedom opened the tournament with a 3-1 win over Pride. Meghan Rodgers (San Diego, Calif.) and Alexandra Wesneski (Forty Fort, Pa.) brought Freedom to a 2-0 lead. Kennedy Cliggett (Warrington, Pa.) put Pride within one before Alexa Hoover (Collegeville, Pa.) sealed with win for Freedom.
Next Courage defeated Patriots, 4-1. A goal from Ashley Sessa (Schwenksville, Pa.) and two from Bridget McCormick (Haddonfield, N.J.) took Courage to a commanding lead. Patriots Ali Campbell (Gilbertsville, Pa.) tallied one back off a penalty corner, but Sessa knocked in her second of the game for the victory.
Following, Dream collected a 3-2 win over Unity. Laura Hurff (Newark, Del.) put Dream up by two but Unity responded with two back-to-back. The first came from Hope Rose (Dauphin, Pa.) on a penalty corner and then Leah Crouse (Virginia Beach, Va.) on a field goal. Dream’s Abigail Tamer (Whitmore Lake, Mich.) put in the go-ahead and game winner.
In the fourth game, Honor responded late for a 3-1 victory against Spirit. Spirit’s Anna Castaldo (Endicott, N.Y.) opened the scoring early. Honor’s Erin Matson (Chadds Ford, Pa.) tied it up before Peyton Halsey (Reading, Pa.) extended the lead and Carter Ayars (Wilmington, Del.) sealed the win.
The final match for the YWNC was the only one of the day to go into a shootout. Liberty scored first with a penalty corner goal from Isabella Bianco (Berlin, N.J.). Brave answered when Katrina Carter (San Jose, Calif.) found the back of the net. In the shootout Brave came out on top, 2-1, for the shootout bonus point.
On the Young Men’s National Championship (YMNC) side, the U-16 teams started the event in a very thrilling match. Stripes came out with Jack Weitzman (Fulton, Md.) scoring a field goal and Mehtab Grewal (Somis, Calif.) converting on a penalty corner. Stars responded to the deficit by scoring on two field goals through Nicolas Diaz (Key Biscayne, Fla.) and Willem Pouw (Santa Rose Valley, Calif.). Zane Boler (Lewisberry, Pa.) put Stripes ahead before Diaz, who tallied his second of the game, evened the score at 3-3. Boler came through with the game winner for Stripes to take Game 1.
For the U-22 men, Stripes came out with a commanding lead, before claiming the 3-1 win over Stars. Jaden Henry-Brooks (Moorpark, Calif.) scored off a penalty corner and William Pratt (Greenfield Center, N.Y.) added two field goals. Stars got on the board through Jeandre Kruger (Wilmette, Ill.).
