VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The fourth day of competition at the 2021 Young Women’s National Championship solidified the final standings and crossover matches tomorrow at the Virginia Beach Regional Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va.

To open the day, Courage defeated Dream, 2-1, to secure their spot in the final. Five minutes into the contest, Ashley Sessa (Schwenksville, Pa.) scored off a backhand to put Courage up. Action was back and forth for the remainder of the period and the whole second frame. Two minutes into the third Dream tied it up off a penalty corner. Laura Hurff (Newark, Del.) sent her drag down to Mayv Clune (Quakertown, Pa.) on the left post for the deflection. Four minutes later Courage regained the lead when Sessa, who tallied her second of the game and game winner, collected a penalty corner rebound and scored.

Next Freedom topped Unity, 3-1, to claim their place in the championship. They got on the board four minutes into the after quick passing led to Anna Miller (Chester Spring, Pa.) finishing. Unity evened the score in the 11th minute after a buildup on the right side was crossed and Nathalie Friedman (Phoenix, Ariz.) one-time swept it in. The game remained tied through the second and third quarters before Freedom opened the scoring in the fourth. In the 50th minute, Cassie Sumfest (Lewisburg, Pa.) converted on a penalty corner drag and two minutes later, Mia Duchars (Saint Louis, Mo.) sealed the win off a backhand.

In the third game, Honor beat Pride, 4-3. Honor scored first in the ninth minute off a penalty corner that went back to inserter Erin Shanahan (Pasadena, Md.) and she put it in the net. They added another with two minutes remaining off a fast break up the right side where Shanahan beat the goalkeeper and walked it in, for her second of the game. In the third, Alana Richardson (Boxford, Mass.) put Honor up 3-0 after receiving a pass off a turnover and ripping a backhand. Pride scored in the 42nd minute when Julianna Tornetta’s (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) backhand was tipped in by Taylor West (Princess Anne, Md.). They used that momentum in the fourth to dive at a late run. Four minutes into the fourth, Pride earned a penalty stroke after the initial penalty corner shot hit the post player’s foot. Tornetta converted to make it 3-2. Less than five minutes later, Peyton Halsey (Reading, Pa.) scored off the backfoot for Honor. With time ticking down, Pride continued to fight and off a fast break Madeline Zimmer (Hershey, Pa.) scored.

Following, Liberty defeated Patriots, 7-1. In the fifth minute, Danielle Grega (Kingston, Pa.) scored for the Patriots off a penalty corner deflection from Ali Campbell (Gilbertsville, Pa.). From there on out Liberty held control adding three in the first quarter, two in the second and two in the third. The first came in the eighth minute off a penalty corner when Isabella Bianco (Berlin, N.J.) beat the flyer and put it into the net. A minute and half later, again off a penalty corner, a slip right found S Sofia Southam (Ann Arbor, Mich.) who shot and scored. Two minutes following Madison Maguire (Rumson, N.J.) picked up a midfield intercept and pushed it through toward goal and Lilly Hengerer (Bedminster, N.J.) got a touch on it. Next off a penalty corner, Casey Umstead (Green Lane, Pa.) swept it and M. Grace Wallis (Blue Bell, Pa.) came through with the tip. In the 27th minute, Maguire added her name to the scoresheet with a backhand goal. The third frame saw Alaina McVeigh (Lansdale, Pa.) score two goals, the first off a right baseline entry and the second after beating two defenders and the goalkeeper.

In the final game, Spirit and Brave went head-to-head and the result was determined in a shootout. Spirit opened the game with a rebound goal off a penalty corner from Caroline Nemec (Darien, Conn.) within the first minute and half. It took Brave until the fourth quarter with less than two minutes into the game to answer after a baseline drive got to Mia Leonhardt (Media, Pa.) who swept it down to Alyssa Parker (Woodbine, Md.) for the deflection. In the shootout, Kelsey Bing (Houston, Texas) was in goal for Spirit and Gianna Glatz (Medford, N.J.) for Brave. In the first round, Brave’s Reagan Underwood (Sinking Spring, Pa.) scored as Spirit’s Corinne Zanolli (Newtown Square, Pa.) attempt was was saved by Glatz. In round two, Parker scored for Brave and Sammy Popper (Blue Bell, Pa.) converted for Spirit. In round three, Bing made a save on Brave’s Cassidy Atchison (Virginia Beach, Va.), while Spirit’s Charlotte De Vries (Malvern, Pa.) scored to tie it at 2-2. Bing came up big in round four, stopping Meredith Sholder’s (Fleetwood, Pa.) attempt for Brave as Adele Iacobucci (Malvern, Pa.) scored to give Spirit the lead. Riley Donnelly (Doylestown, Pa.) couldn’t convert for Brave, securing Spirit’s shootout win and extra bonus point.
