What You Need to Know:
An eighth-place finish doesn’t quite tell the whole story of China’s 2020-21 FIH Hockey Pro League campaign, with two defeats against the top ranked Netherlands being their only action of the season before the COVID-19 global health pandemic intervened. Despite their lack of top-level action, they performed admirably at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, beating hosts Japan and higher ranked New Zealand as well as suffering a narrow defeat at the hands of eventual silver medalists Argentina before being eliminated ahead of the knock-out phase.
Zhong Jiaqi, nominated for the 2019 FIH Rising Star of the Year award, the 22-year-old is one of the brightest young stars of a China team that does not contain a single player over the age of 27. In May, it was announced that former Netherlands' head coach Alyson Annan would take over the reigns of China.
