Tour Rosters Announced for Upcoming U-16 & U-18 USWNT Trips

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Following a training camp this past weekend, the Junior High Performance staff has selected the U.S. U-16 and U-18 Women's National Team tour rosters for upcoming trips abroad in April. Both teams will travel to Europe to compete against several international teams and get exposure against elite-level competition.

 

The U-16 USWNT will head to Valkenswaard, The Netherlands where they will play in a Four Nations Tournament from Friday, April 7 to Monday, April 10. The tour will consist of five set matches and a crossover game, against opponents that include the U-15 teams of Belgium, France and The Netherlands.

 

The U-18 USWNT will kick off their tour in Utrecht, The Netherlands against the Oranje U-16 Women’s National Team at the SV Kampong on Monday, April 3, then head to Antwerp, Belgium to take on Belgium’s U-18 Women’s National Team on Tuesday, April 4. In addition, the squad will travel to the e.V. Düsseldorf in Düsseldorf, Germany where they will compete against Germany’s U-18 Women’s National Team on Thursday, April 6.

 

These selections came following a third training camp for both the U-16 and U-18 squads, which took place at Queens University of Charlotte in Charlotte, N.C. from March 10 to 12. Both teams have been preparing to compete at a high international level in anticipation of these respective April tours.

N.J.), Ryleigh Osborne (Crofton, Md.), Lilian Soldan (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Opal Sparling (Chester Springs, Pa.), Aubrey Turner (Downingtown, Pa.), Shae Wozniak (Wayne, Pa.) 

The U-16 USWNT will be led by head coach Tamara Durante and assisted by Caroline Nelson-Nichols. The team manager will be Mary Beth Zahnleuter.

 

“First off congratulations to all the athletes who have made the squad. This past weekend in Charlotte, we really challenged these young athletes with various tactics, and they rose to the occasion,” commented Tamara Durante, U-16 USWNT Head Coach. “We’ve identified a promising pool of players from our various training camps for this year’s U16 squad.”

“Deciding the Travel Squad for the tournament in the Netherlands was not an easy task as we have seen so much growth in the players since December. Congratulations to the athletes selected to the Travel Squad. This tournament will be a great opportunity for our U-16 players to be exposed to some of the best players in this age group from some strong hockey nations. We believe we have picked a competitive team and we look forward to learning and growing as a team at the tournament.”

The U-18 USWNT is led by head coach Ralph Boersma and assisted by Stacey Bean. Sarah Mansfield is team manager and assistant coach.

 

“First of all, I would like to give a big compliment to all the players that have attended the camps since January,” said Ralph Boersma, U-18 USWNT Head Coach. “The group has been focused, engaged and fun to work with. We have been steadily building on our core team principles within ‘The USA Way’.”

 

“After the conclusion of the Charlotte camp we are very excited to announce our selection for the tour team. With the level of talent in the group there are always difficult decisions to make but we believe we selected athletes who are highly skilled and gritty. The biggest challenge is now ahead of us: a week of hockey against the world’s best in our age group. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to grow as individuals and as a group, all while continuing to lay the foundation for USA Field Hockey’s future success.”

 

A handful of athletes were unable to participate at the February camp and were invited to trial at this March camp. Joining the U-16 squad are Reese D’Ariano (West Chester, Pa.) and Opal Sparling (Chester Springs, Pa.). Named to the U-18 team are Hope Haynes (Katy, Texas), Sabrina McGroarty (Mickleton, N.J.) and Melea Weber (Macungie, Pa.).
