VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – This past week, 144 elite female high school, collegiate and post-collegiate athletes battled it out at the 2022 Senior Nexus Championship (NXC), presented by Osaka Hockey, at the Virginia Beach Regional Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va. Taking place Sunday, July 17 through Friday, July 22, this event served as the initial selection opportunity for the Rise, U-21, Development and Senior U.S. Women’s National Teams.

The bronze medal game was a high scoring affair between Los Angeles and London. Nine minutes into the first quarter, after having their penalty corner saved, Los Angeles re-entered the circle through Julianna Tornetta (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) and Hannah Jarvie (Malvern, Pa.) swept it in off the post. They doubled their lead with 2 minutes remaining before halftime, when Hope Rose (Dauphin, Pa.) hit a straight shot off a penalty corner. Thirty seconds into the fourth quarter, London added one back when Sophia Gladieux (Boyertown, Pa.) scored off a penalty corner. That was short lived as off the restart, Los Angeles immediately countered and scored when Maggie Kondrath (Downingtown, Pa.) put it in off the post to make it 3-1. Los Angeles extended the lead in the 49th minute when Kondrath pulled around the goalkeeper and tucked it in. Two minutes later, Gladieux cut the margin again for London firing a backhand into the corner. Los Angeles added one more in the 55th minute off a penalty corner rebound from Celina Riccardo (Downingtown, Pa.), but not before London made it 5-3 when Gladieux tallied in the 56th minute.

The gold medal game was between Paris and Salt Lake City. With 1:30 remaining in the first quarter, Abigail Tamer (Whitmore Lake, Mich.) put away a goal mouth scramble to give Paris a 1-0 lead. Lane Herbert (Celina, Texas) made it 2-0 to Paris in the 34th minute pushing it into the corner after collecting the rebound. In the 53rd minute, Salt Lake City got on the board when they scored off a penalty corner. Two minutes later, Salt Lake City evened the score off a penalty corner through Peyton Hale (Forest Mill, Md.). Two minutes following, they took the lead when a ball got through and Hannah Miller (Malvern, Pa.) deflected it in off the post. Salt Lake City completed the 3-2 comeback to win gold.

Following the competition, some awards were presented. A Young Player award was given an athlete who was under 21 years old, as well as a Goalkeeper of the Tournament and Player of the Tournament. Ryleigh Heck (Berlin, N.J.) from Paris was named the Young Player, Kealsie Robles (Seaford, Va.) from Atlanta was the Goalkeeper of the Tournament and Sophia Gladieux (Boyertown, Pa.) from London was the Player of the Tournament.
