by USA Field Hockey

VIENNA, Austria – On the opening day of the 2023 Rohrmax Cup in Vienna, Austria, the U.S. Men's National Indoor Team came away with a win over one of the top clubs in Austria, SV Arminen.

SV Arminen, who is also the host of the event, was a very strong, aggressive well coached team. They started the game quick, earning a penalty corner goal 1-minute into the game, but USA answered, when Pat Harris (Moorpark, Calif.) converted on a field goal. The first quarter ended, 1-1.

Two minutes into the second quarter, Marius Leser (Mannheim, Germany) converted to give USA a 2-1 lead. SV Arminen tied the game up at the 19-minute mark, bringing the half to a close and 2-2 deadlock.

In the third quarter, USA took the lead, 3-2, in the 27th minute when Stuart Kentwell (Spring City, Pa.) found the back of the goal. That was all the scoring in the third frame with both sides getting a few good opportunities.

The match's final tally came from an open net goal that was scored by Leser, his second of the game, in the 38th minute for the final score of 4-2.

USA goalkeeper Jonathan Klages (Berlin, Germany) had an outstanding game and the defense held their own and improved throughout.

USA will face Czech Republic U-21 tomorrow at 4:30 a.m. ET in their second pool game of the Rohrmax Cup.
