by USA Field Hockey
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Field Hockey is pleased to announce, after the cancellation of the 2020 edition, the return of the Young Women’s National Championship this summer alongside the addition of the new Young Men’s National Championship.
Both tournaments will be held concurrently at the Virginia Beach Regional Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va. from June 15-20, 2021 and will feature the top players in the country in their respective age groups competing to be crowned national champions.
“After a year of cancellations and postponements, we are looking forward to getting back on the field and straight back into some top-level competition this summer,” said Phil Edwards, USA Field Hockey’s Senior Manager of Coaching and Performance. “We are also very excited to add the new Young Men’s National Championship to the calendar. Being able to run the two competitions side-by-side means that the week in Virginia Beach promises to deliver a true tournament atmosphere for the players.”
The top collegiate and post-collegiate players will compete in the high-level, international structured Young Women’s National Championship with selection for the 2021-22 U.S. U-21/ U-22 and Women’s National Development Teams at stake. All current Rise, U-21 and National Development Team members will be invited to participate in the tournament.
Athletes who are eligible to play in the tournament* and are not currently members of the Junior High Performance program are invited to apply to be selected to attend the event through the Young Women’s National Championship Virtual Trial. The Virtual Trial will replace the usual High Performance Centers for 2021, with Trial details to be announced soon.
The new Young Men’s National Championship will serve as the initial selection opportunity for the 2021-22 U.S. U-16, U-18 and U-21/U-22 Men’s National Teams. The tournament, which will provide the same high-level, international structured competition environment as the women’s equivalent, will feature both U-16 and U-22 divisions. All current U-16, U-18 and U-21/U-22 Team members will be invited to participate in the tournament.
Like the women’s side, players who are not currently members of the Junior High Performance program are invited to apply to be selected to attend the event through the Young Men’s National Championship Virtual Trial, with further details to be announced soon.
